Today, the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD) joined a coalition of 25 groups, including 14 of its member organisations, in signing a letter to the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, calling for an immediate release of documents describing the corporation’s collection and analysis of psychological information about teen users.
The letter comes after The Australian newspaper revealed that Facebook presented research to one of its advertisers that shows it collects and analyzes in real time sensitive data on its young users’ emotions, for marketing purposes. The research was conducted without users’ knowledge.
The signatory groups are concerned about how this sensitive information can or could be used in the future by marketers to take advantage of young people’s emotions, and want to know how the data was used, when it was used, how many users were impacted and the names of the companies that received the data.
