TACD opposes the use of coercive tariffs by the U.S. to attack EU laws protecting people

EY and U.S. flags floating

The Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD), a network of 76 consumer and digital rights groups, strongly opposes the U.S. administration’s use of coercive tariffs to pressure the EU over legitimate digital, consumer protection, and sustainability policies. Trade retaliation should not undermine laws designed to safeguard people’s rights.

TACD Statement on coercive tariffs - 3 April 2025In reaction to President Trump’s announcement of 2 April 2025, TACD publishes a Statement urging the EU to stand firm in enforcing its laws while ensuring countermeasures do not harm consumers. Instead of escalating trade tensions, the U.S. and EU should work together to tackle common challenges—such as the rise of unsafe products online—by aligning customs controls and taxation. Cooperation, not coercion, is the path forward.
